Pride and queer life across Austria
More than a century ago, Emperor Franz Joseph’s brother, Archduke Ludwig Viktor, was sent away from Vienna to Salzburg after a scandal at the Zentralbad, the bathhouse where the Kaiserbründl men’s sauna now welcomes its guests. Today Vienna, Graz and Salzburg all celebrate Pride in the open, and these are their stories.

Vienna, Graz and Salzburg in 2026
In Vienna the Regenbogenparade passed Parliament, the State Opera and Schwedenplatz on its way back to the Rathausplatz. In Graz the march went from the Stadtpark down the Herrengasse and across the Hauptplatz to the Volksgarten. Salzburg spread around 35 events over ten days, and on 5 September its march set off from the main station for Mirabell.
ON THE DAY
A march, a park and a club in one day
A Pride day in Austria is a long one. In Graz this summer the heat moved the speeches to the start of the march, where people could stand in the shade, and the Parkfest in the Volksgarten took over from there. The outfits that make it through are the ones you forget you are wearing, light enough for the street at noon, with a shirt in the bag for later.
